Neuroscience Meets E-Learning: How New Research in Cognitive Load Theory Effects Instructional Design

Pioneers in the world of e-Learning such as Richard Mayer and Ruth Clark created a standard set of rules for designing multimedia instruction to apply what they had learned about cognitive load. These rules were based on their years of research and experiments and set the foundation for the idea that designers should think about how information is presented in multimedia for the best transfer and retention. The last decade of neuroimaging, specifically through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), has given us a window into what cognitive load “looks like” when our brains our receiving information and has provided us a new way to test and measure the effects of cognitive load. This session will present findings from a research literary review of the recent cognitive load research and provide real-world strategies for managing cognitive load in multimedia instruction.
